He was gone again, into grey time. Running over the spiky grass, forgetting that bushes were like iron bars as he tried to push through them and shredded his hands and legs and hip… Crashing and slicing into iron-like obstacles and knee-high grass that owed more to upright cutlasses than herbage. Realising he had to calm down and think and get on a track; follow the pathway into town…
At least she won’t be getting any further away while I’m in grey time, he was trying to calm himself. I did tell Mayonne. I did. She said about the gate being open— Down here? In there? Over here? Around… no no.
More and more frantic, working his way down to the town.. Could they have gotten this far? When did she disappear? If she got to the docks… kidnapped… she could be on any of four or five dozen ships. They’ll all be locked down for the night; very protected from entry.
It was hopeless. So many ships, a whole town and port… warehouses, offices, stores, shops and stalls, bars and hostelries, stables, wagon storage, stabling… Where where where? Along every back street. People walking, now rigid in the semi-darkness, some bars still doing a good trade. A few seamen in groups…
