Dropped to one knee… Kyre’s head exploding in violent light and pain. Clutching at his head; gripping the cutlass hilt with iron fingers. Not now! Not now! The original splitting of his skull – back to cripple him; the shattering, fiery fingers within. Gasping, and frantic to recover. I need to be fast. Fast. Now!
Not four-dozen paces away, the outer gates of the brigand fort burst open; releasing a swarm of yelling, sword and pike-wielding pirates. Faces lit up with too-easy a triumph: a fast, brutal death was all they had in mind for this braggart invader who came alone.
A whole storm of them dashing, racing, stumbling across the loose rocky, half-grassed gap. Heavy embroidered protective jackets flapping or tight-toggled. Cutlasses, pike-hooks and boarding axes whirling, so close. So loud.
Froikit – A storm of gleeful ranting brigands upon him, the first blows wild, to his arms and shoulders; to the brass-and-leather helmet, and—

Henders came to see him in the bar of the Sailors All.
‘We see things through the same eyes, Kyre—’
‘You’d best pray not, Sire Henders,’ and amused himself with a fleeting red-eyed spark shower.
‘We both want the best for Adam’s Landing—’
‘I did. I’m finished with that. You have freedom from the brigands of the coast and the hills, and wealth enough to use it as you wish. Anything else – go tell it to your council.’
‘The Council,’ Henders quietly informed Kyre, ‘held a full meeting last evening; Committee, Council, League. You were on the agenda. In fact you were the agenda.’
‘They must have been bored out of their minds: they’ve never agreed anything with any unity.’
‘Precisely. They were considering you, given your record as chair of the minor meetings and other arbitration one-offs.’ He sipped at the beaker dubiously a few times before deciding it was drinkable.
‘They were desperate, huh?’
