Your sign says, “Practise your English with me.” Does that mean I can speak with you about anything?’

At his pale hinoki wood desk, Jimmy Smith stood, and performed a keirei bow to signify the respect that was due to anyone who spoke to him whilst he was in this serving position. Thirty degrees forward from the vertical; no more or less. Hundred-times-a-day-repetition made perfect.

The exquisite features of the young Japanese lady smiled her most perfect semi-formal egao smile.

As so often in the past five months, Jimmy was in love on the instant. ‘My speaking is at your disposal for as long as you are within these walls,’ he assured her. ‘But only in English. I am a service provided by the Admirable Company to encourage honourable persons to speak in the English language and in the English manner.’

‘Why?’ She almost put her hands together in an onegai please gesture, but thought better of it; remembering that she was the customer, and therefore the superior one....
