This is from "Foundling", the first book of the series "Realms of Kyre" - Medieval-style epic saga.
The inside story of a Foundling man/being/whatever discovered badly injured in a forest swamp. With no knowledge of his past or this present Realm of the Lordlands, there is no way his life is going to be predictable or easy.
