Looking out the window as they sat on the alcove settee, Kyre suspected that she had more romantic thoughts in mind, and he was more than willing to consummate their blossoming relationship. Not that I planned for that as an end to the evening: purely wanted for Graggy to have a delightful night to remember; the centre of attention, feeling and looking great. Help to put the trek through the hills behind us.
‘The lights are brighter than ever out there, Graggy; see this lot on the new ship?’ He pointed, then turned when she didn’t respond. Head on one side, eyes closed, fast asleep.
Broad smile, and he slid a comforting arm around her, and felt her meld against him. A glance down for a moment, admiring her pretty little face; a scatter of freckles; neat little figure and that superb dress that showed her off so well… He chuckled to himself, ‘Good thing I wasn’t counting on anything.’
Gazing at the lights on the topmast of the new ship, he was soon in Starland with her.

What amazed Carod, and the whole crowd, was the way the Try Again erupted in flames seemingly along its whole length at the same time. It was so fortunate that the crew could jump into the water, although such a shame that many men were clinging on to the slimy pilings for an age, shouting for rescue.
The warehouse fire was so unexpected. Who would have thought they would store spirits and kegs of powders alongside cotton bales, oil barrels, timber planking? It must surely have been a stray spark from the ship or the pier that spread the flames?
To plug it all, two of Henders’ black-garbed officers of the laws approached Sire Carod and presented him with papers that divorced him and forbade him from entering the family mansion again. Two young men had sworn to statements that they had been forced to engage in perverted relationships with him, a forid and a large fish. ‘And he had also tried to involve his own children and a large glub-sucker turtle.’
Kyre restricted his satisfaction to a fleeting smile.
